Who created this work?<\/em><\/p>\n

From 22 July 2022 at the Pilgrimage Centre in \u0160iluva, you can see “Cooperation; Connections, Patterns and Relationships”, a three-map environmental installation by Lithuanian-American Kathryn Frund Kathryn Frund – Matter and Movement<\/a>, which is intended to reveal the connection between the Chronicles of the Catholic Church in Lithuania, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the current events of the war between Ukraine and Russia. This is not the first time that this New Haven (CT) based artist has presented her artwork at the \u0160iluva Pilgrim Centre. Exactly one year ago, visitors to the pilgrimage centre were greeted by a video and an interactive component of the \u0160iluva International Biennial of Contemporary Art’s installation “Touched by the Ancestral Land” (Kathryn Frund – ART PILGRIMS): a bracelet for which the visitor had to write their name, city and country in a logbook in return for a bracelet that told them how far they had travelled. As the artist herself says: “My art project was a study of the journey that my Lithuanian grandfather made when he emigrated to the USA in 1908. Although the two world wars permanently severed all ties with his family in Lithuania, with my social art project I tried to reconnect with my heritage and search for possible family remnants.”<\/p>\n

What is the meaning of the work?<\/em><\/p>\n

This time, the author is not travelling over a distance to reach as many contemporary Lithuanians as possible, but through the history of Lithuania. Looking back, she seems to be making historical connections between the history of 20th century and 21st century Lithuania. The three maps: of the United States, Lithuania and Ukraine, and Russia, like an altar with flaps, mark the meaningful connections between similar events in different stories. During the Soviet era, Lithuania was helped by the United States of America to take the message to the world about Lithuania’s disregard for the rights of Catholics and the arrests and deportations of innocent people to Russian camps. Volumes of the Chronicles of the Catholic Church in Lithuania were published in Chicago, IL, and later translated into more than eight foreign languages. These volumes consisted of 71 issues published between 1972 and 1989, containing information about the life of the faithful in Lithuania, recorded on photographic film and secretly transmitted through Russian dissidents to New York. Today, Lithuania is helping Ukraine to spread the word about Russia’s illegal attack on Ukraine and is helping with humanitarian aid. Lithuania would not support Ukraine if it were not for the support of foreign countries, especially the United States of America, with which we are celebrating 100 years of diplomatic relations this year. The intersection of these two trajectories in Lithuania echoes the Lithuanian heart here in the heart of Lithuania, in the Shrine of \u0160iluva.<\/p>\n

The author made the maps from Tyvek, a woven polypropylene material commonly used in construction. She chose this material for its luminous and ephemeral properties. The maps were coloured and folded to mimic historical maps used before GPS. Iconic patterns representing each country’s past (the sunflower for Ukraine, the sickle and hammer for Russia, the word “Chronicle” for the United States of America, the cross for Lithuania) have been cut into the surface, and hand-painted bands tell the story of the special relationship between the four countries. The link between Lithuania and Russia is in green\/blue, the colour of the camp uniforms, which ends with the camp bars. The link between Lithuania and the United States of America is in white\/black, the colour of the photo strip, which ends with the LKB chronicle. The link between Lithuania and Ukraine is in yellow\/blue – the colour of the Ukrainian flag, ending with a box).<\/p>\n

How was the artwork born?<\/em><\/p>\n

This link was born out of conversations between the artwork’s curator R\u016bta Gini\u016bnait\u0117 and the artist Kathryn Frund. As the artist writes: “In the first weeks of the Russian attack on Ukraine, I contacted R\u016bta and offered my support. Several conversations followed. Aware of Lithuania’s fragile history of occupations, most recently by the Soviet Union, she expressed concern about the violence that could escalate and spread. Ruth discussed US-Lithuania relations, specifically the “Chronicles of the Catholic Church in Lithuania” series of books published in Chicago, IL. She talked about the map project on US-Lithuania diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary celebration of the Lithuanian Catholic Church Chronicle.” It was very interesting for her to hear for the first time the history of Lithuania and \u0160iluva during the Soviet era and how Lithuania feels in the context of current events. The artist’s historical thread with Lithuania was severed at the beginning of the 20th century, so the symbolic recreation of the second half of the 20th century and the current historical events in an artistic form is a kind of hope to continue her relationship with Lithuania. As the artist herself writes: “While working on this project, I discovered a connection with Lithuania that was broken 114 years ago. These maps are a story of hope, created from the shadows of historical repression.” Through the map, light penetrates and is discovered with faith.<\/p>\n
